Ahh, where should we start? Should we tell you about the astonishing culture? Or should we start with the ancient sites? Maybe we should write about the people? Well, one thing for sure, one blog post won’t be enough to describe Cairo, the capital of Egypt, which is indeed a mystical city. Here are 5 signs that you’ve landed in Cairo…

You Hear “Welcome”. A Lot!

As soon as you land in Cairo and make your way through the airport, rest assure you’ll be hearing “Welcome” a lot! Or at least some variation of it. There is “Kol Sana Wnta Tyab”, which is the equivalent of Happy Birthday in Arabic; you might be hearing “Menwar ya Khwaja”, which is also another Egyptian way of saying “Welcome”. So Whenever you hear any of these phrases, just nod and smile; and we believe you’ll be doing that a lot.

The Sun is Always There

cairo

Cairo is a sunny city; actually, all of Egypt is. Regardless of the season, the sun is always up and shining its way through the crowded city of Cairo. It will definitely feel different and we recommend you take advantage of the outdoors and get sun-kissed while enjoying a breeze of fresh air.

 Sounds All Around

If there is really a city that never sleeps, it’s most certainly Cairo! From dusk till dawn, there is always some form of hustle and bustle going on in the streets of this crowded city; but don’t you worry, the noise is a part of the exotic experience. We recommend that you embrace the lively ambiance of the city ( and maybe use ear plugs when sleeping).

You Smell Falafel

cairo-flafel

You might have tasted falafel before, but with all due respect, the real deal is in Cairo. If you want to taste falafel like it should be then Cairo is the place to try it. We don’t think you’ll be able to resist the smell anyways…

Packing List for Your Trip To The Middle East

It’s no secret that the weather in Canada is so different from Middle Eastern Countries, like Egypt, Jordan, Dubai, Turkey, etc. Nevertheless, the weather might be the easiest thing to pack for. There are several other aspects you have to consider in order to nail your packing list to your Middle Eastern trip. We give you the basic packing list to get you started…

Umbrella

Generally speaking, the weather in the Middle East is sunny in both, the summer and winter; of  course,  it tends to be sunnier in the hot season than what you’re used to in Calgary, while in winter, there is an average frequency of rainfall. That’s why we recommend bringing an umbrella with you when packing to the middle east, regardless of the season.

Scarf

Unlike what you might think, not all women in the Middle East wear scarves and abayas; so don’t worry you won’t be standing out too much without a scarf. However, packing a scarf should definitely be on your list because there are several religious sites you’ll be visiting, and usually, such holistic destinations require a conservative cover-up.

Long Sleeves

Packing long sleeves is very convenient for both, the summer and winter seasons in the Middle East; yes the weather is generally warmer than that of Calgary’s, and it could be tough to pull off long sleeves especially during the hot summer. Yet, long sleeves will serve as a protection for your skin and will reduce the possibility of you getting sunburned or having any rashes due to the sharp sun rays and high humidity.

Dark Shaded Colors

Most cities in the Middle East, like Cairo for instance, are way more crowded than what you’re used to in Calgary, and with crowded streets and traffic comes pollution. So when packing, it’s better to choose darker shades as they last longer and don’t show stains like brighter colors.

Loose Fit Cottons

Humidity is definitely higher in the Middle East than Calgary; especially in Summer. Packing loose fit cottons will make you avoid awkward situations of getting your clothes stuck to your body.

Comfy Sneakers

Winter or Summer, a pair of comfy sneakers is what you should pack when traveling to the Middle East. Middle Eastern countries have bumpy streets, and many of the ancient sites you’ll be visiting have a sandy rocky ground. That’s why we recommend you go with comfy sneakers when packing to make touring and walking easier for you.

Sun-block

A sun block cream is your best friend during your trip to the Middle East. During winter and summer, and even if the weather is cloudy; don’t go out without wearing your sunscreen.

Surgical Mask if you’re Asthmatic

With several factors put together, like humidity, crowdedness, too many car exhausts, and sandy dusty sites, the atmosphere in the Middle East might be a bit tricky for those who are Asthmatic. So pack a  surgical mask and keep yourself protected.

6 Inventions We Have Egyptians to Thank For!

On our blog, we’ve talked about iconic Egyptian sites, tours, Egyptian traits, and even recommended the pictures you should take during your tour in Egypt! This time we’ve decided to highlight a different aspect of Egypt’s rich history and shed light on the pioneering side of the Land of Pharaohs.

Calendar

Ancient Egyptians were the firsts to introduce the 12-month/365-day calendar that we still use today. They divided the year into three main seasons, based on the Nile River’s flood cycle. The Ancient Egyptian calendar was mainly  used to guide farmers towards the best time for planting their crops. The three seasons were Akhet, in which they plant the seeds; Peret, during which the actual growth of crops happen; and finally there was Shemu, in which they harvested their crops.

Makeup

Ladies, now you know who you should thank for the marvelous invention that is makeup! Ancient Egyptians, especially royalties, were very keen on appearances and looking their best, which shows in the various art crafts and drawings. Back then, eye makeup was a must for both genders, and Kohl was commonly used.

Wigs

ancient-egyptians-wig

Yep, you read it right! The ornamented hair pieces you’ve seen on Ancient Egyptian statues are actually wigs and not just an exaggeration by the sculpture! During the hot season of summer, Ancient Egyptians used to shave their heads as a sign of hygiene to keep the pests away, and covered their heads with wigs, because it wasn’t widely acceptable to be bald.

Writing Language

ancient-egyptian-hieroglyphic

Ancient Egyptians were the firsts to document their lives and communicate in writing, using the iconic Egyptian Hieroglyphs’ system. Ancient Egyptians also invented black and multicolored ink that marvelously managed to last till our present time! Moreover, they used to write on Papyrus, the first form of papers known to man.

Medicine and Surgical Instruments

The foundation of medicine is rooted in Egypt. Ancient Egyptians were pioneers in several medicine fields and numerous cures, all while using natural basic ingredients.  Ancient Egyptians had futuristic revelations when it comes to human anatomy, and we have mummification as a timeless proof for that. Moreover, the oldest medical document known to man was written on papyrus during the Ancient Egyptians era, in which the structure of human brain is discussed, marking the initiation of neuroscience.

Construction Tools

ancient-egyptians-construction

One word: Pyramids! Archaeologists and historians still stand in awe in front of the spectacular constructions of Ancient Egypt. The Great Pyramids of Giza, The Great Sphinx, The Karnak Temple Complex, are just few examples of the constructional and architectural wonders that the Ancient Egyptians built.

Alexandria Should Definitely be a Part of your Private Tour in Egypt

Lying peacefully on the shores of the Mediterranean is the beautiful city of Alexandria; the biggest and most popular city right after Cairo the capital. Alexandria’s historic significance dates back to the 331 BC, when it was founded by Alexander the Great, and has served as the Roman and Byzantine Capital for 1000 years. The city of Alexandria is a melting pot where the Greek culture collided with the Egyptian  charm, forming an exotic civilization with an enigma that’s worth unraveling. Below we’ve gathered the top sites you have to visit during your stay in Alexandria in time of your private tour in Egypt…

Citadel of Qaitbay

egypt-14a-077_8924402_l

We recommend the Citadel/Fort of Qaitbay to be your first stop in Alexandria during your private tour in Egypt. The Fort of Qaitbay was built in 1477 AD by Sultan Al Ashraf Sayf Al Deen Qa’t Bay at the Eastern harbor of the Pharos Island, on the exact site and from the remains of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, which was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The Citadel of Qaitbay is considered one of the strongest and most impressive fortification constructions in the world, and remained as a symbol of military strength throughout the Mameluke period.

Montazah Palace and Gardens

Another must-visit site is this sophisticated spacious complex of buildings and gardens. Escaping the heat of Cairo, in 1892 Khedive Abbas Hilmy built the Salamlek Palace , the first construction in the Montazah Palace area, to spend the summer season by the sea. Then years later in 1932, King Fuad I extended the complex by building the Haramlik Palace and royal gardens. The Florentine twist added to the Pseudo-Moorish architecture style will take you back in time. Have a journey back to the golden era through  visiting Montazah Palace – Alexandria, during your private tour in Egypt.

Stanley Bridge

travel_egypt_361

You can’t visit Alexandria without having a walk on Stanley Bridge. Influenced by Islamic architecture, Stanley Bridge is one of the most popular landmarks in Alexandria, where you can enjoy the panoramic scenery of the sea and get a true taste of the authentic Alexandrian vibe. The Stanley Bridge isn’t just popular for tourists, but it’s also a preferred spot to locals; you can observe fishermen lining up over the 400 meters bridge, in addition to lovebirds and friends enjoying the breezy weather and indulging in all sorts of snacks and drinks.

Pompey’s  Pillar

Pompey’s Pillar of Alexandria is the only Roman triumphal column of its kind in the middle east, and the largest of its kind outside of Rome. The Pompey’s pillar was built around 297 AD in honor of Diocletian, the Roman Emperor and his victory over an Alexandrian revolt back then. The 27-meter-long pillar was visited and described by the Iconic Traveler Ibn Battuta in 1326 AD, telling the story of an archer who climber the pillar using robe he shot up towards the pillar. And now you can create your own tale by visiting this astonishing site during your Private Tour in Egypt.
